Nairobi is the capital and largest city of Kenya and the city and its environs also from the Nairobi Province.
Place of cool waters or The green city in the sun
The name “Nairobi” comes from the phrase “Enkare nyirobi” which translates to the “place of cool waters” However it is popularly known as “the green city in the sun”.
Growing from a simple rail depot on the Mombasa Uganda railway in 1899, the town grew to become a capital of the British East Africa in 1907 and later the capital of a free Kenya Republic in 1963.
3rd largest city in Africa
It lies on the Nairobi River, covering 684 sq kms and has an elevation of 1975 metres above sea level and therefore it enjoys a moderate climate. It is the 3rd largest city in Africa based on population and the fourth largest in infrastructure development. Nairobi is a cosmopolitan and multicultural city, maintaining a lot of British presence and also other foreigners who arrived and settled in the town.
Being a prominent city in Africa, it is the home to many companies and organizations including the UNEP and UN Offices in Africa. Nairobi has been defined as a prominent social centre. It is divided into constituencies and administrative centers and occupied by groups of person who can be categorized as either high, middle or low income earners living in different parts of the Nairobi. Kibera slums, the second Africa largest slum to Soweto (South Africa) is found in Nairobi.

The City has many parks and open spaces throughout the city. The famous ones include the Uhuru (freedom) Park, Uhuru Gardens, Jeevangee Gardens, City Park, Bomb Blast Memorial Park and Nairobi Arboretum.
Center for safari and holiday
Nairobi is a centre for safari and holiday with many world class hotels and shopping malls. It is a centre too for literature, film, art and music. It is also a sports centre hosting many of the sports facilities and international stadiums.
Nairobi too is an educational centre and many top universities and tertiary institutions of learning are to be found in Nairobi. Nairobi is home to many and most of Kenya”s news and media organizations and several multimedia organizations such as BBC and CNN.Not to forget it has tourist attractions such as Nairobi National Park, Nairobi Railway Museum, Karen Blixen Museum, Bomas of Kenya and the Giraffe Centre.
Nairobi is served by Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Wilson Airport.In Nairobi town, you will be able to move around by matatus, buses, smart buses and taxis. A railway line connects Nairobi to Mombasa.
